Malays without Islam

A few days before this book was sent to the printer, while doing the final dummy, I met Tara Singh. Singh who originally was my family lawyer has become a personal friend to me. I showed him a prototype of the book. An observant Sikh, Tara told me ‘Is it Just Malays without Islam? I think all religions are having the same problem’. 

I am a Malay so I write about the Malay condition, if I was an Arab I would have written about the Arabs without Islam. I asked him if he has seen the movie House of Saddam?

1. Pada hari Ahad 20 Disember, 2009 yang baru lalu Sasterawan Negara Datuk A. Samad Said telah melancarkan 5 buah buku karangan Cut Nyak Fakinah Siti Zainon Ismail sempena genapnya 60 tahun umur Siti Zainon pada 18 Disember, 2009. Nama-nama bukunya ialah: i) Pakaian Cara Melayu, ii) Bait Senandung Malam, iii) Memasuki Taman Puisi, iv) Delima Ranting Senja dan v) Aceh - Suara Dari Hujung Tambak. Majlis ini diadakan di Rumah Tamu Jeumpa D'Ramo di Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

I have intended this 59th book of my 50 years as a writer, to be different from the rest of my books. Although initially I wasn’t sure how, whether it is going to be a mere translation of my previous Malay book or shall it be a truly Malaysian book which includes Namewee, an entertainer who suddenly becomes a very controversial figure because of his song Negarakuku.

When I began my career as a political commentator in 1972, I have been an ardent observer of my surroundings when Tunku Abdul Rahman was then Prime Minister and now Najib, the son of Tun Razak became the 6th Prime Minister. Year after year I began to see the forming of a signature form of writing, my personal style. But as time passes, environments change, the younger generation has lost interest. I am not the same me when I was a young turk, full of passion and anger.
