Singh who originally was my family lawyer has become a personal friend to me. I showed him a prototype of the book. An observant Sikh, Tara told me ‘Is it Just Malays without Islam? I think all religions are having the same problem’.

1. Pada hari Ahad 20 Disember, 2009 yang baru lalu Sasterawan Negara Datuk A. Samad Said telah melancarkan 5 buah buku karangan Cut Nyak Fakinah Siti Zainon Ismail sempena genapnya 60 tahun umur Siti Zainon pada 18 Disember, 2009. Nama-nama bukunya ialah: i) Pakaian Cara Melayu, ii) Bait Senandung Malam, iii) Memasuki Taman Puisi, iv) Delima Ranting Senja dan v) Aceh - Suara Dari Hujung Tambak. Majlis ini diadakan di Rumah Tamu Jeumpa D'Ramo di Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

When I began my career as a political commentator in 1972, I have been an ardent observer of my surroundings when Tunku Abdul Rahman was then Prime Minister and now Najib, the son of Tun Razak became the 6th Prime Minister. Year after year I began to see the forming of a signature form of writing, my personal style. But as time passes, environments change, the younger generation has lost interest. I am not the same me when I was a young turk, full of passion and anger.

I was looking for answers, the questions that’s been brimming in my head are questions which I believe are looming in the minds of every human, regarding himself, who and for what reason he exists? I am baffled when I think about where our identities come from, how much are we shaped by our culture and environment.

But as a social and political commentator, I sometimes put such questions aside in order that I may think about the more immediate questions. Right now, the question that needs to be posed is about the Malays and Malaysia.

Pada hari Jumaat 27 Februari, saya sedang duduk di beranda rumah saya di Janda Baik. Sambil itu saya perhatikan pohon-pohon yang telah saya tanam.
 
Bagi saya ia adalah sesuatu yang sangat mengembirakan, kerana pohon-pohon yang saya tanam, ada yang sudah berbuah, ada yang berbunga lebat mengharumkan taman bagi pelawat Taman Hana Wadi Hussien. Tidak cukup dengan itu, ada juga pohon yang saya tanam yang telah kuat, tinggi, dan memberikan keredupan disamping hembusan angin yang nyaman.

Malam Sabtu, 7 Februari, Saya duduk menonton 3 Musketeers produksi Walt Disney bersama anak saya, Muhiyuddin Al-attas. Sambil menonton cerita tersebut saya mula memikirkan tentang apa yang mampu saya kaitkan dengan situasi politik Malaysia yang dilanda kaki kacau, terutama sekali yang berlaku di Perak. Saya perhatikan watak Cardinal Richeliue, kaki kacau Perancis, yang menggunakan kelicikanya hampir menawan kerajaan Perancis jika tidak kerana kaki kacau, 3 Musketeers, Athos, Porthos dan Aramis. Jam 10 pagi, Selasa 21 Januari 2009 dari jendela bilik 524 Hospital Ampang Puteri, saya melihat keadaan kawasan membeli belah Ampang Point dan kawasan sekitarnya. Keadaan di sekeliling dan manusia yang kelihatan, begitu juga dengan kenderaan tidak banyak beza dengan pemandangan di kota-kota besar di luar negara, cuma Ampang Point dan sekitarnya tidak memiliki pencakar langit seperti di segi tiga emas Bukit Bintang dan di seluruh ibu kota. Inilah hebatnya Malaysia jika dibandingkan dengan negara yang membangun dari segi kebendaan.
